Installation issues:

Problem 1: I have put in the first of the two disks and nothing happens.

Answer: Check that you have put in Disk One first. You will be prompted for disk Two. If you make this mistake with XP, it will put up Windows explorer, showing two files: just change the disks around it all should start normally. If the installation still does not start, look for you CD drive with Windows Explorer, and click on Setup.exe.

Windows XP may also throw up the same window when you put in the second disk in the correct order. Just close it - it does not make any difference to the installation.

Problem 2: Installation takes a long time.

Answer: It does indeed maybe 10 minutes. But you are installing the equivalent of 1200 telephone directories of information!

Problem 3: I installed the guide and all went well for a few months, but then it stopped working.

Answer: You did not install the update, which can be found here.

Problem 4: Windows XP asks me all sorts of security-related questions about the update. Is it safe?

Answer: It is safe. Please just answer "yes" or "agree" to all of the questions and you will get a normal installation.

I cannot see all of the text and pictures

The screen resolution must be set at at least 1024 x 768 pixels. (The Trek Peru guide will appear centred on the screen at any higher resolution.) To change your screen resolution, click Start > Control panel > Display; select 'settings' tab and alter the screen area tab.

I cannot hear anything in the music or speech sections

First, check that your sound system works by using another application. If it does, then the most likely explanation is that another program - typically, Apple iTunes, has redefined defaults in Internet Explorer. Open your Windows Media player > Options and select the 'Files' tab. Select All and click OK. The problem should then be fixed.

Second, recent security "fixes" to browsers mean that the softeware that we used when the guide was published in 2005 may, in some cases, no longer works. We are about to publish an upgrade (due April 2008) which will fix this. It will, however, require you to have Apple QuickTime installed on your machine. Please be patient: all software developers have the problem of the ground perpetually changing under their feet as a result of these alleged "fixes".

The guide worked for a while, but now it asks for a key.

As mentioned above, you did not download the final stage of the installation and your key has expired. Please mail us for a new key, use it and then - afterwards - download and install the file that you can find here.

I do not understand the menu system: sometimes it's there and sometimes it is not.

The menus are explained in detail in the 'help' section in the guide. There are three main kinds of menu. First, there are "chapter heading" pages which have only buttons on them. These give choices which fan out from them. Just click on what you want. Text pages have two kinds of link in them. There are standard links, which are shown in bright blue, like this.

Second, There is also the moving menu, which allows you to print the page, for example, and also to jump to the chapter headings. The moving menu vanishes when you scroll a page, and is replaced by a tiny triangle which skips along with you. Click on it and the menu appears. We do this because the main menu becomes really annoying if it tracks you all of the time.

The third kind of control is found in pages which show pictures at full screen resolution. If you look at the top left, you will see silver controls that turn red as you put your mouse over them. They have tool tips, or offer explanations of the picture that you are viewing.

Do not forget that where to you to last is automatically recorded, and you can jump there from the main 'home' menu by clicking on Bookmark.

How do I save or print the big pictures in the guide?

We have not allowed that.
