The guide has selected around 3500 images from a database of nearly 50,000 photographs, all taken by our staff over the past three years. About 3000 of these are full screen, high quality images. Here for ten examples, which are reproduced at relatively low quality in the interest of download speed. Please look to the top left of these pictures in order to find the navigation controls. Please note that you will see these properly only if you are using Internet Explorer 6+ and also if any form of pop-up control is turned off. We assert copyright over these images. Here are four additional essays.

The remaining 500 or so images are embedded as illustrations in the supporting texts. These are usually 900 pixels wide, and of varying height. There is an example of this given below, although for reasons of bandwidth, both it and the full screen images above are shown at lower quality than they appear in the guide.

Pelicans in the Paracas nature reserve in central Peru.

We have not used moving images, as they take up a disproportionate amount of storage space. On the whole, they tend to add little that a good still image does not. We have, however, included a number of panoramas.

Fishing on the Amazon, near Iquitos in eastern Peru

We intend to develop a gallery of images taken by users of the guide, much as we have done for our Himalayan guide. (See here for this.) If you have contributions, please send them to us, and we will give you full credit. (We do not, however, pay for such contributions.) The mail section gives you the address to which to send your images - and indeed, text, sketches and poems if you wish! (The images which we accept for this are not, as we hope that you will understand, usually highly personal holiday snaps - "me and my wife in Cusco" - but rather images which other people are likely to find interesting. They should be at least 600 pixels wide and 400 pixels high. Please tell us what they show and when they were taken.)
